The first step in this process is to draw a small amount of blood from the patient and place it in a centrifuge. This device separates the blood and allows us to collect and set aside the platelets and their associated growth factors. The concentrated platelets found in plasma can contain large reservoirs of bioactive proteins, including the growth factors that are essential to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. Once separated, we numb the area to be treated with an anesthetic injection. We can then target the injury using an advanced imaging technique (ultrasound) and inject the platelets into the problem area.

Performed safely in our medical office, this procedure takes approximately one to two hours, including preparation and recovery time. Most patients experience little or no discomfort and return to normal activities immediately.

We have found the easiest place to harvest adult cells is from the back of the hip area (iliac crest). The procedure is done in our offices, through the use of an ultrasound. It allows us to give the utmost care and precision when harvesting the cells and in turn gives our patients the best chance of success. Patients lay face down as the doctor thoroughly cleans the area before numbing the skin and bone. A special needle is then inserted into the bone to withdraw the marrow, which contains the regenerative cells. It's important to remember that the adult cells we harvest for regenerative therapy are simply returned, or relocated, to that same patient during the same procedure.

This procedure is very much like a bone marrow biopsy, except instead of looking at the cells to help find a patient's diagnosis, we harvest these cells to use their regenerative capabilities in your injection. The actual procedure to harvest the cells is pain free once the surface of the bone is frozen with anesthetic. Afterwards, the majority of our patients have a slight ache at the needle site that is easily treated with Tylenol. Most of our patients say it is roughly the same as having a filling at the dentist.

The human body keeps a supply of stem cells available to help repair injured and degenerated tissues at all times, but in some areas the concentration is much higher, namely in the bone marrow and Adipose tissue. This makes it fairly simple to retrieve them for therapeutic purposes. Now

As medical science continues to advance, so do we.  We are continually evaluating new therapies that may improve the lives of patients struggling with pain and musculoskeletal disorders. The emerging and exciting field of regenerative medicine, including stem cell and platelet rich plasma therapies, has allowed us to expand the spectrum of treatment options from tradition pain management protocols.  Stem cell and platelet rich plasma procedures have become valuable tools in the treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal disorders including arthritis, tendonitis and acute injuries.  With regenerative medicine, we can now treat many of these disorders with your own existing stem cells to improve pain and function and potentially avoid more invasive and higher risk procedures such as surgery.

As medical science continues to advance, so do we. Our focus has begun shifting away from traditional pain management to the groundbreaking field of regenerative medicine. Stem cell and platelet-rich plasma procedures are now considered the top non-surgical treatment option for those struggling with orthopaedic injuries, arthritis and other degenerative conditions. Although surgery should always be a last option, too often it can be presented to patients as the only option. With regenerative medicine, we can now treat many of these conditions with your own existing stem cells, enhancing your body's natural healing power, and possibly avoiding invasive and painful surgeries.
